Ganoderma lucidum, an oriental mushroom (Figure 9,,) has a long history of use to promote health and longevity in China, Japan and other Asian countries. It's a large, dark mushroom with a shiny exterior and a woody texture.
The Latin word lucidus means “shiny” or “shiny” and refers to the varnished appearance of the surface of the fungus. Lucidum is called lingzhi, while in Japan the family name Ganodermataceae is reishi or mannentake. Reishi has 400 different bioactive compounds and, as reported in scientific studies, they have a number of effects that include modifying the immune system, anti-inflammatory, anti-tumor, sleep-promoting, antibacterial, antiviral, anti-diabetic, antioxidant, anti-aging and anti-ulcer drugs, to name a few. Reishi mushrooms have been used for a variety of conditions, including chronic bronchitis, because they reduce histamine.
A Reishi mushroom protein extract has been shown to powerfully lower blood pressure with effects that last up to 8 hours and reduce damage to the cells that line blood vessels. Some studies have found that reishi mushrooms could increase life expectancy, fight cancer and improve overall well-being. While most of the benefits of reishi mushroom for the immune system have been seen in sick people, some tests have shown that it can also help healthy people. Other research also indicated that four weeks of taking reishi mushroom extract did not produce any harmful effects on the liver or kidneys in healthy adults (.
Taking reishi mushroom along with medications that lower blood pressure can cause blood pressure to drop too low. Some research found that people who took the reishi mushroom for 4 months were almost twice as likely to experience a side effect than those who took a placebo (2). Several studies have indicated that the molecules found in the reishi mushroom can lower blood sugar in animals (28, 2). Studies have linked reishi mushroom extracts to faster regeneration of healthy liver cells and the release of free radicals that have accumulated in the organ, which promotes overall health and well-being.
